The photographer in Alentejo, for a wedding

FAR AWAY by THE PORTUGAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Perhaps, dating out under an olive tree at Quinta do Louredo in Évora, the newly married couple laugh together during the session with the wedding photographer.

There’s, always, something special when I go inside Alentejo to photograph a wedding. I know that Alentejo is fashionable, now, and everybody wants to go there but I am one of the people that very rarely go there and, if I was not asked, it was not today that I was on adventures through roads surrounded by holm oaks and cork oaks, looking far away and the far way being really far away like the joke of the Alentejo man who was asked where the village was, and with the calm of the plain, he answers always the same, for him, pointing: is already there. Raul and Inês asked me to collect all the pieces of the event I could, on their wedding day. So, I went by the roads, over valleys and hills so small, that it seems to me that, those who design them, found a way, on the contrary of the road engineers, to go up and down the highest ones and arranged unnecessary curves so that people do not say that Alentejo is already there and always straight, until the end.

But do not think that the wedding photographer does not like Alentejo. That was denying a part of me and I did not want to do it. Only, it is true, I lost the habit because the time I am out of it and, maybe, like those sailors that are always seasick when I go on the road, I prefer roads with big mountains and valleys so down there that make me always think that I am always arriving somewhere or something and the already there, is…already there. Or else, once more, as it happens a lot to the wedding photographer, these are just fantasies to find words for one more article.

I was saying, in the beginning, that when I enter Alentejo I feel something special when the smell of the rockrose or the wheat harvest comes to my nose, something changes in me. It is true. The wedding photographer is from Alentejo, one of those that is out of there for so long, and, because he does not like to cry over lost causes, he prefers only to feel it when he needs to go there. And, going there, was for the wedding of Sofia and Nuno and he could not find a better pretext. If that connection comes out only with the smells of Alentejo, you can not imagine when I start to hear an almost singing talking in style according to the place we’re coming from, I walk under the very hot sun that only Alentejo people feel it normal, I feel coming to my ears the songs of millions of cicadas perched over the holm oaks and I see the whitewash of the homes, only founded in Alentejo. That is how I know that, since I cross the Tagus river, and I go on photographing a wedding there, far far away, it will be a very special thing to rediscover a vital part of me, because, in fact, there are things that we never forget.
