Very often, the choice of a place for the wedding ceremony, when it is a religious ceremony, has a very practical reason: the proximity of the place where the wedding celebration will later take place. At other times, the choice is made because the couple simply likes that particular church, for aesthetic, emotional, or even institutional reasons.
There could be many other reasons, but there is no point in listing them all here. Every couple has their own.
In Sónia and Diogo’s case, the reason was above all their connection to the place. The church belonged to Sónia’s history, to the place where she grew up and where she had been baptised. It was therefore much more than a space chosen for the ceremony: it was a place that was already part of her life.

A Beautiful Experience for a Wedding Photographer
What I particularly enjoyed learning, as the wedding photographer, was that restoration work at the church had been interrupted so that everything could be cleaned, organised and prepared to receive them on their wedding day.
The photographs record the unusual appearance of the space: the large white area where the usual carved woodwork would normally be, the window where the patron saint’s figure should have been and, almost as proof that this really was happening, a scaffold that can still be seen in one of the many photographs I took.
When you belong to a place and deserve that place, these things happen.
I remember Sónia’s pride as she explained to me why the church looked the way it did. For me, it became another one of those beautiful experiences that are part of being a wedding photographer and that could never really have been planned.

I am not going to write about all the reasons why couples choose a particular place for their wedding ceremony or reception. I don’t know those reasons, and they can be as different as the people themselves.
It may be the proximity to the reception venue. It may be because the ceremony and celebration take place in the same location. It may be because of a family connection. Or simply because that place has an importance that does not need to be explained to anyone else.
What I do know is what a wedding photographer should try to do when arriving at a place chosen by the couple: understand its importance and bring that intensity into the photographs.
That is undoubtedly what motivates me when, with the camera in front of my eyes, I choose the small rectangles I see through it and which, later, I will call wedding photographs.
I am not simply photographing the space. I am photographing what that space means at that particular moment.

This is where they will feel happy. This is where they will promise one another a happiness that everyone around them will wish for them: the families on both sides, who from that moment onwards become connected through new bonds, the wedding guests and their closest friends.
Everyone shares that moment in their own way.
The wedding photographs should contain all of this. The emotion of some, the anticipation of others, the concentration of those following the ceremony, and the contagious happiness that appears when, leaving that place, the newlyweds receive everyone’s wishes for a happy life together.
This is where the wedding photographer finds the subject of his photographs.
It is not simply about photographing a ceremony. It is about leaving a record that that place, those people, and that moment were real.
