Portugal wedding photographer, the color and the future

WITH COLORS OR WITHOUT THEM by the WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

The bride's arm is stretched out as a friend squeezes a sleeve, during preparation for the wedding at Convento do Espinheiro, in a composition by the wedding photographer in Évora.

The color dilemma

At Convento do Espinheiro in Évora, friends help the bride with her dress, seen by the wedding photographer in Évora.

Many years ago, I didn’t even think that one day I would become a professional photographer, let alone a wedding photographer when I started photographing in black and white. I have this article in the back that tells exactly how it happened. Whenever I could, throughout my time with photography, I used this method of taking pictures, on paper and in black and white.

However, as soon as it became part of my life professionally, black and white wasn’t always, or rarely, part of my delivery to clients and, over time, it stopped occupying my thoughts whenever I took it, thought about it, and imagined it.

The black and white photos

Seen through an opening in a door, the bride, standing with her dress on, looks back, as seen by the wedding photographer at Convento do Espinheiro in Évora.

Then, one day, I fell into a wedding, all of a sudden, without expecting it, and I’ve stayed there to this day. Wedding photography began to occupy my time, my mind, and my imagination. Without realizing it and nothing having been imposed, they, in black and white, came to the fore and, to this day, have been part of the wedding photographer’s life, as can be seen on his blog, where he shows them and gets in touch with his stories, his desires, and impressions.

Changes

Sitting, the bride, helped by two friends, puts on her shoes before leaving for the wedding ceremony at Convento do Espinheiro in Évora.

However, a new era has arrived. Wedding photographers need new challenges and have gradually begun to change the way they want to show their wedding photographs. Until now, his work was like a beautiful tree with imaginary fruits in black and white with a few splashes of color, because there are also unmistakably beautiful ones.

Either one or the other

From now on, the wedding photographer will completely separate and, depending on the client’s wishes, transform the bride and groom with a simple yes, I accept… and show them as photographs. So it will either be color or black and white. On the one hand, because I don’t want to, and I’m unable to, part with one to the detriment of the other. It will always be up to the bride and groom. On the other hand, I want to let each side let me in completely without one side thinking about the other.

This will be the new adventure of the wedding photographer who hopes to be able to imbue his work in a more intense and personalized way, giving each of the modes the chance to spur him on to better and deeper flights and for all of us to win.

Dot by dot:

  • Although I started in photography with black and white, color always took over when I started doing it professionally, in the first phase.
  • But, when I became a wedding photographer, it was almost the other way around. Black and white photography began to predominate.
  • Although this has been the case until now, a more radical decision is needed to stimulate creativity in the delivery of wedding photographs.
  • So from now on, depending on the decision of the bride and groom, the wedding photographs will either be in color or black and white.
