Christening Photographer During the Pandemic: An Unforgettable Portrait

At the entrance to the Church for the christening ceremony, the bride's father in a ritual gesture of blessing, on the baby's face.

Christening photographers had to adapt, like many professionals, to challenging times during the Covid-19 pandemic. When I photographed Leonor’s christening, we were still under the weight of restrictions. A christening ceremony during such a historical moment required more than technical skill — it called for sensitivity, adaptability, and a careful eye to capture the emotion hidden behind masks.

Photographing family members and guests with covered faces was a challenge I won’t forget. The setting was unusual, the church quieter than usual, and the lack of visible facial expressions made everything more introspective.

The Importance of Documenting the Times We Live In

In the church, during the christening ceremony, the girl's family members, few, standing and separated from each other, with anti-Covid 19 masks on their faces.

As a christening photographer, I felt I had a special mission that day. It wasn’t just about capturing traditional christening photos; it was about recording a piece of history. The pandemic marked us all, and by documenting it, I contributed to a visual archive that one day will be revisited with emotion.

In that context, christening photography became more than a memory — it became a visual testimony of a time that tested us. Fellow photographers in other fields did the same, building a collective memory of this defining period.

Between the Strangeness and the Beauty of the Images

Just before the ceremony at the baptismal font, the baby sleeps on her mother's lap, seen among other family members, out of focus.

The Duality of the Christening Photographer

Photographing Leonor’s christening was both strange and rewarding. On one hand, capturing godparents, family, and guests with face masks created a distance. On the other hand, Leonor and her closest loved ones offered genuine, touching moments that created visually strong and emotional compositions.

Covered Faces and Eyes That Speak

  • The eyes became the main focus in christening photos.
  • Subtle, hidden expressions became harder to capture.
  • The lack of visible smiles challenged the photographer to tell the story in new ways.

Even without smiles, you could feel the love, the warmth, and the solemnity of the christening ceremony. Emotions found other ways to shine — a gesture, a look, a supportive hand.

Christening Photographs with Soul and Context

On her father's lap, at another moment of the baptism ceremony, the baby girl points to something looking down.

Photos can only be made from what happens in front of the lens. Therefore, the photographer must be alert, empathetic, and ready to capture moments in their most honest form. During Leonor’s baptism, there were plenty of meaningful moments that made the day special.

Real Moments, Even in Difficult Times

  • Leonor remained joyful, surrounded by her parents’ and godparents’ love.
  • The christening photos recorded details like the holy water, exchanged glances, and gestures of tenderness.
  • The church, although less crowded, offered a quiet, sacred setting for symbolic and powerful photographs.

The Role of the Christening Photographer as Visual Chronicler

On her father's lap and next to her mother, during the baptismal candle ceremony, the baby girl looks, as if enchanted, at the light emanating from the candle.

As a christening photographer, I see myself as a storyteller. That day, the challenge was to tell a story that, despite limitations, had all the essentials: emotion, love, and truth.

The images taken that day weren’t just photographs. They were documents. Visual fragments of a unique moment in time. One day, Leonor will browse her album and understand that she was born and baptized during an unusual time, yet nothing essential was missing, thanks to the love that surrounded her.

Photographs Will Always Be the Bridge Between Past and Memory

  • A christening album is more than a collection of pictures.
  • It’s a visual narrative that remains.
  • It’s a legacy of affection and family identity.
Sitting at the table for the baptismal signatures, the parents, the godparents and the priest all look at the newly baptized girl.

Conclusion:

Leonor’s christening, held during the pandemic, proved that even in difficult times, we can experience beauty, faith, and strong family bonds. For the christening photographer, each image became a chance to immortalize real emotion, even when hidden behind a mask. Christening photography, that day, was not just about recording — it was about bearing witness.
