I enjoy photographing speeches at the wedding reception. For the wedding photographer, unfortunately, due to their nosy photographic side, it’s not a common tradition in Portugal. So whenever I find myself in front of such an event, I make the most of it.
But for my always curious cameras, obsessed with laughter, wide eyes, furtive tears, and astonished faces, it’s not the speaker who makes them float among the guests in search of that moment that justifies their satisfaction. No matter how eloquent the speech is, the photograph lies in those who listen.

A wedding day has several parts which, if it were a book, would be called chapters – as I prefer. I already have many articles on the other chapters, and more will come, but this one, which doesn’t always happen, deserves special attention for many reasons. Its analysis isn’t my focus since I can’t always listen to them with the attention some deserve. These are the speeches of the wedding day.
They usually happen after the appetizers, chosen by the bride and groom for their guests, have been enjoyed, the wine has loosened voices and imaginations, and at a given moment, someone raises theirs and everyone listens. The wedding photographer waits a few moments to understand what kind of speaker is ahead to prepare the approach for the wedding photographs that will follow.
