A Rainy Wedding Is a Blessed Wedding
It was, without a doubt, the most physically demanding wedding I have ever photographed. Not because photographing it was difficult — quite the opposite — but because it was one of those long, intense days that kept me constantly on the move.
The journey began the day before, heading to the groom Celestino’s family home in Pardilhó, near Estarreja. Along the way, I started to worry about what the following day might bring as the rain began to fall.
At first it was just a light drizzle, the kind that is almost more irritating because you can never decide whether to keep the windscreen wipers on. Then it turned into steady, persistent rain, while the radio forecast confirmed that the next day was expected to be much the same.
There is an old Portuguese saying that goes, “a rainy wedding is a blessed wedding.” That may well be true, but I doubt many wedding photographers, whose work depends so much on light, find much comfort in hearing it.
A Good Omen for the Wedding Photographer
Thankfully, the following morning brought a completely different surprise.
At first light, the rain had disappeared, leaving behind that wonderfully clean, bright atmosphere that only comes after a storm. It felt like the perfect omen for the day ahead — and, as it turned out, it truly was.
Celestino’s father’s house provided a beautiful setting for the start of the wedding coverage.
The next challenge was reaching Leiria, where Vanessa was getting ready with her family. That meant many kilometres on the motorway — something I have never particularly enjoyed. I have always preferred the slower pace of Portugal’s national roads.
They may take longer, but they are far more interesting than endless motorways guided by the impersonal voice of a GPS.
When we finally arrived, Vanessa’s family welcomed us warmly. The atmosphere was relaxed, joyful, and full of anticipation. Those genuine moments made pressing the shutter almost effortless, creating photographs that still tell the story of that day.
The Wedding Ceremony and Celebration
The ceremony took place at the beautiful Church of Caranguejeira, before everyone moved on to Quinta dos Lagos for the reception.
From the very beginning, it was clear that the guests were ready to celebrate. Between heartfelt embraces, laughter, emotional moments and plenty of dancing, the day seemed to pass in the blink of an eye — as wonderful wedding days often do.
When it was finally time to head home, there were still many kilometres ahead. Strangely enough, they no longer felt quite so long.
Perhaps there really is some truth in the saying that when you truly love what you do, you hardly notice how tired you become.
Preparations and Emotions: The Beginning of a Memorable Day
Vanessa and Celestino’s wedding began long before the ceremony itself.
Travelling to Pardilhó, near Estarreja, to photograph the groom’s preparations took place under heavy rain the day before, leaving everyone wondering what the weather might have in store.
Fortunately, sunrise transformed everything. Blue skies returned, beautiful light filled the landscape, and the conditions became perfect for photographing an emotionally charged wedding.
Celestino’s family home provided a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for the first part of the day. Later, in Leiria, Vanessa prepared for the ceremony surrounded by family, where every smile, embrace, and quiet moment naturally became part of the story.

The religious ceremony took place at the beautiful Church of Caranguejeira, an important landmark for the local community.
Its architecture, historic interior and beautiful natural light created an inspiring setting for the exchange of vows. There was no need for elaborate staging — the atmosphere of the church spoke for itself.
More than the building, however, it was the emotions shared between the couple, their families and friends that made every photograph meaningful.

The guests quickly set the tone for an unforgettable celebration. There was music, laughter, dancing, and countless spontaneous moments that made photographing the day an absolute pleasure.
