Space for Photography

The new one with joined hands, before starting her preparation for the wedding.

A wedding on the beach. More precisely, on Praia da Sereia, Costa da Caparica. For lovers of the beach and the sun, it’s a beautiful way to get married—and for me, it was a new experience. And new things, when taken seriously, have this complicated side. Great, never done it before, what a brilliant idea. And… will it turn out well, will I be able to show the reason behind the couple’s choice?

Well, before that, I visited the place where Ana was getting ready with her friends for the big event. That part—I know I like. Mirrors, lenses, dodging the hairdresser’s hands to find that perfect space for the shot, the right angle for the lipstick on the lips, and sometimes, a cloud of hairspray for the soft-focus effect.

For the wedding ceremony and reception

If there’s something that excites me as a photographer, it’s that magical space belonging to the feminine world where mirrors, combs, hairdryers, lipsticks, highlighters, sprays, and nail polish become privileged subjects for those who enjoy capturing transformation stories through the sensor of a camera.

From there, off to Praia da Sereia, where Bar Waikiki awaits both the ceremony and the party. Once there, Mr. Sun, Mr. Wind, and Mr. Sea surely had Ana and Rui in high regard. Frequent visitors, I was told, and therefore deserving of good treatment. As the wedding photographer, if Mr. Sun had just moved a little to the right, he would have cast his light in a way more pleasing to this humble seeker of golden light in strands of hair.

Happily ever after, wishes the wedding photographer

But we managed—and as the saying goes, it’s in difficulties that we see what people are made of. Seems to be true. The ceremony went as expected, with the groomsmen throwing off the officiant’s rhythm, who eventually went with the flow and joined in the laughter, as true friends and colleagues do in such grand moments.

The place and the people made the party great. The late afternoon lit up the couple just as the elements were meant to, and once inside, everyone became a single body celebrating the new couple. As agreed in advance, the wedding photographer left before the DJ started, which I regretted—they say it was wild. Happily ever after, again.
