Photographing the unexpected

One of the things that gives me the most joy, as a wedding photographer, is being able to photograph the unexpected. It doesn’t have to be something unusual or spectacular. Most of the time, it’s just a fleeting moment, a kind of curious peek that makes me grab my camera with trembling hands, knowing that from spotting to reacting, it may already be gone, managing to capture a photo just before it ceases to be.

  • Unexpected moments become memorable in the hands of an attentive wedding photographer.
  • The value of spontaneous photography lies in its authenticity and emotion.
  • Small gestures and glances capture the true essence of the wedding day.

The wedding photographer went with them

That was the case with this photo. Mother and daughter do the final touch-ups before leaving for the ceremony. The wedding photographer was just retrieving his bag, full of machines and lenses ready to deliver joy, when, at the end of the hallway in front of a hidden mirror, he spots this silent scene. A click disturbs the quiet, and… that’s it, we’re ready. Let’s go. And the wedding photographer went with them.

  • Intimate moments before the wedding ceremony are visual treasures.
  • The best wedding photographs are often unplanned.
  • Being in the right place at the right time is key for the wedding photographer.

You need to know:

On a wedding day, I come across photographs of many deeds, mannerisms, and states of mind. They’re found in someone sitting alone, in a way that inevitably makes a photograph, or in a noisy group debating how to best secure the bride’s veil to her hair, or during the wedding ceremony, where a guest is seen among others, emotional enough to step into one of my cameras.

Then there are those I love most but are hardest to capture: the ones that move too quickly, busy with a task; the ones who quickly peek through a door then vanish; the full-faced laughter that only lasts a moment.

These demand several things at once — things the photographer is rarely given in such moments — to be saved in time and not fade away as soon as they appear. These are the moments wedding photographers talk so much about.

  • A wedding day reveals countless unique emotions and movements.
  • Capturing authentic wedding photographs demands attention and speed.
  • From the bride’s veil to a fleeting laugh, everything can be unforgettable if well captured.
