The First Day of Summer and the Wedding

In a mirror, the groom's mother, with him, buttons his suit vest.

Seasons, weather, and calendars don’t always align well. It’s not the first time that, on my way to fulfil the destiny of my cameras on a wedding day, the long-range forecast for an ideal and blessed wedding day doesn’t turn out as expected due to the absence of sunlight.

Put simply, on Inês and João’s wedding day, things might not have gone as planned. Rain, despite the saying, could have forced us to escape unwanted drops. And indeed, that’s exactly how it was during the first part of the task.

To confirm the importance of this opening paragraph, it’s worth noting that it was a day of celebration… the first day of Summer. What is certain is that the winds and clouds, I’m sure, somehow knew what was happening, discussed it, and just as the bride transformed into one—because a woman only becomes a bride after the dress is worn—Summer arrived, hand in hand with Spring, and from that point on, everything was as it should be.

Being a Wedding Photographer is Enough

In a mirror, in front of them, the groom tightens his tie with the help of his mother.

Photographing weddings has an adventurous and challenging side that might not seem obvious at first. But it’s true. Everything happens at a dizzying pace, with car races in between—sometimes worthy of American movies—with GPS systems failing to find the address, and churches sealed off by parked cars, leaving us scrambling for a spot of our own. And off we go again, running to greet the priest as if we were finalists in an Olympic sprint.

Pure truth. But it’s also true that all of this adds a vital challenge that makes the result—the photographs—even more rewarding. I don’t need to travel the world, become an athletics or motorsport champion, or climb or descend mountains at high speed on skis to feel the rush and energy of adrenaline. Being a wedding photographer is enough.

In profile and smiling, the groom hits the sleeve of his coat.

A Wedding in the Heart of the Alentejo: The Celebration of Inês and João

On the first day of Summer, Inês and João were married at the imposing Church of Santa Maria da Devesa, in Castelo de Vide. Despite uncertain weather forecasts, the day turned out to be perfect for capturing unique moments through the lens of a wedding photographer.

The Ceremony at the Church of Santa Maria da Devesa

The Church of Santa Maria da Devesa, located in Praça D. Pedro V, is one of the largest temples in Alto Alentejo. Built between 1789 and 1873, it stands out for its Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, with two bell towers and an imposing south-facing façade.

The church’s interior is equally impressive, with a rectangular nave divided into four sections by painted pilasters. The barrel-vaulted ceiling and the main chapel with a Baroque-style decorated altar provide a majestic setting for any wedding ceremony.

The Reception and Captured Moments

After the ceremony, the bride, groom, and their guests moved on to the wedding reception, where joy and emotion were captured in every photograph. From the cake cutting to the first dance, each moment was recorded with professionalism and sensitivity.

The gardens of Castelo de Vide served as the backdrop for the couple’s photo sessions, taking advantage of the natural beauty and the soft light of the day’s end. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha, located on a nearby hill, was another iconic spot where the couple posed for the wedding photographer, creating unforgettable images.

The Importance of a Professional Wedding Photographer

Being a wedding photographer is more than capturing images; it’s about telling stories, eternalising emotions, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Every wedding is unique, and the ability to adapt to different situations, like weather changes or logistical setbacks, is essential to ensuring excellent work.

In the case of Inês and João, the experience and keen eye of the wedding photographer were crucial to capturing the essence of the day, from the preparations to the final dance. Attention to detail, sensitivity, and refined technique resulted in wedding photographs that reflect the authenticity and beauty of the moment.
