An Important Task: Getting Married in Lisbon

Lisbon, the city of lovers. Lisbon, the mother of fado and the lives it sings. It was here that a couple from Poland decided, on a getaway from the other side of Europe, to formalise the bond that life had tied between them.

When they first spoke to me, the idea was only to photograph the ceremony and take a few pictures for the memory. That was not enough. They came from the other side of the continent — how could I not take them through beautiful, sunlit Lisbon in the late afternoon, to make sure their lovely visit was properly marked and honoured for such an important task: getting married.

Creating a Visual Memory of Their Bond with Lisbon

  • Late afternoon meeting at the nearly beach-like Praça do Comércio
  • The Tejo River at Cais das Colunas symbolically echoes the couple’s emotions
  • A photographic stroll through the city’s historic heart
  • Capturing the Lisbon light, warmth, and romance in each frame

That’s how we met again at the end of the day, in the nearly beachside Praça do Comércio, kissed by the Tejo River at the legendary Cais das Colunas — as if it were a lover’s mouth in constant need of proof of love, and the river itself a reflection of the bride and groom, mirroring the cool intensity of their desires and emotions.

Indeed, there is nothing better than the old riverside to create, through photography, a memory of that bond — a memory they can use to prove, whenever telling someone their adventure, that it’s true, not just a tale told by a romantic spirit with no evidence. I wanted to make sure of that. From there, we strolled together towards the place where they had chosen to celebrate, at the table, the beginning of their life-long union.

Let my photographs be witnesses to that, confirming that they were here and that they enjoyed it.

  • This article also serves to attest that everything suggests the baby already on the way seems to owe its very beginning — and perhaps its complicity — to the city of Lisbon. Best wishes.
