The wedding photographer and his adventures in picking the pictures that constantly challenge him during the wedding day.

THEM, I KNOW HOW TO SPEAK by THE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER IN SINTRA

In a mirror in the distance, the bride looks at herself, together with her mother and a friend, as she gets ready to leave for the ceremony, in a composition by the wedding photographer in Sintra.

The True Essence of a Wedding Photographer

Next to her mother and two friends, the bride puts on one of her earrings to finish dressing for the wedding.

A wedding photographer is not just someone who carries a camera. They are a storyteller, a hunter of moments, a silent observer who transforms the ephemeral into the eternal. Over the years, I’ve discovered that wedding photography is much more than a visual record – it’s a wordless language understood through the gaze.

When Words Fail, Eyes Speak

I’m not a photography theorist. I don’t master terms like hermeneutics or semiotics, nor do I intend to. What I know is what I feel when I look at an image that captivates me. In those moments, the eyes decide – there’s nothing more to say. The wedding photographs that truly matter are the ones that make guests, the couple, and even the photographer pause for a second. Because there’s something there. Something that can’t be explained. Only felt.

The Art of Finding the Perfect Photograph

I often say I don’t take photographs – I find them. They’re there, scattered throughout the wedding day, as if hiding, waiting to be discovered. And my job is to find them at the right moment, with the right lens, from the right angle. Wedding photography is made of split-second decisions, of feeling the vibration in the body before pressing the shutter. It’s almost like an invisible dance between the photographer and the moment.

What the Wedding Photographer Does:

  • Observes every detail of the wedding day with extreme attention
  • Chooses the ideal lens for each situation, even when all of them “scream” to be used
  • Knows there are unique moments that will never happen again – and must always be ready

The Photographer’s Invisible Acrobatics at Weddings

During a wedding ceremony, an inattentive observer might find the photographer’s behavior… peculiar. There are moments when I crouch behind a vase, stretch as if trying to reach the sky, or walk in an almost comical way not to disrupt the moment. But everything has a purpose: to find the right photograph. The one that tells a story without needing words.

Behind-the-Scenes Realities:

  • I’ve peeked through flowers to capture a groom’s discreet tear
  • I’ve run through wedding guests to catch the perfect light
  • I’ve lost shots that slipped away by milliseconds – and never came back

Between the Invisible and the Unforgettable

It’s in these gestures – almost invisible to those attending the wedding – that the great images hide. The ones the couple will cherish forever. The ones the guests will share and comment on. The ones that capture more than just the image: they capture the feeling, the emotion, suspended time.

It’s Not Theory – It’s Instinct

Don’t ask me to write a treatise on photography. I’m not that kind of professional. But if you ask me to find the most genuine wedding photos, the ones that reflect love, nervousness, joy, and connection… then yes. That’s me. That’s my job.

What You Really Need for Your Wedding:

  • A photographer with sensitivity, not just technical skill
  • Someone who feels the moment before capturing it
  • A professional who understands that every photograph is unique, just like every couple

Conclusion

Wedding photography is not just about cameras and flashes. It’s about intuition, patience, and emotion. It’s a craft that lives in the moment and becomes eternal in the images. A wedding photographer doesn’t need grand speeches. They need attentive eyes, an open heart, and a finger ready to click at the right time. That’s all. And that’s all that matters.
