An American in Sintra

The bride's shoes draped over the back of the bed.

One day, Carolina and Craig met. She was Portuguese, he was American. Lisbon was the backdrop.
Later, when they decided to get married, they chose the Quinta da Penha Longa for both the wedding ceremony and the celebration.

The Penha Longa Resort served as the preparation venue for the bride and groom. In the magnificent natural setting of the Sintra Mountains, the day was bathed in brilliant sunshine, a blue sky, and greenery from trees and plants that could not have better matched the day’s unfolding events. Capturing wedding photography in a location like this is an opportunity not to be missed.

The ceremony took place at the beautiful Penha Longa Church, also known as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, offering any wedding photographer a breathtaking atmosphere and giving the ceremony all the importance it truly holds.

For the celebration, the rooms were dressed accordingly, hosting dinner, mingling, and dancing that carried on into the night. I must thank Carolina and Craig for their great kindness, as well as their families from both sides of the Atlantic. Thank you both.

Wedding ceremony: Penha Longa Church (Nossa Senhora da Saúde)

The Penha Longa Church, also known as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, is part of the former Penha Longa Convent, classified as a National Monument since 1910. This temple features Manueline, Mannerist, and Baroque elements, with a Latin cross layout, vaulted ceilings, side chapels, and a Johannine gilded altarpiece.

From a wedding photography perspective, this small church offers:

  • A solemn and historical atmosphere, perfect for capturing the bride’s gaze, the groom’s expressions, and guests’ emotions.
  • Architectural details, such as the choir loft, vaulted ceilings, and the dome-topped bell tower, can form artistic frames in the photos.
  • Controlled natural lighting, with light entering through side windows, highlights the most meaningful moments.

Additionally:

  • A symbolic and monumental space for the exchange of vows.
  • The bride and groom benefit from richly detailed scenes to capture emotion.
  • Contributes to cinematic-quality photography throughout the full gallery.
