Wedding on a Day of Continuous Rain

It was a strange day to photograph a wedding. Everything could go wrong for me. First of all, the wedding photographer was completely excited about what he knew was going to happen. And what was planned was a blessing for those who enjoy doing things out of the ordinary. Bride and groom getting ready in the same place, bride taking the metro to Cais do Sodré. Seriously João?
But that’s wonderful. I had never done anything like that. And the photographer’s head buzzes with anticipation as he arrives at the house, and João, once ready, secretly takes him to where Helena is having her hair and makeup done, and then comes back home to finish getting ready.
Now, the strangeness of the day had nothing to do with what I just described. It felt strange to a photographer spoiled by Portugal’s good weather. It was that kind of rain that rains all day long. Not the kind that soaks you immediately, but the kind that wets you slowly, because it doesn’t force you to run from it like heavy rain does. On the other hand, this slow rain creates a soft light, just like it, and blurs distant backgrounds because it hides what’s behind.
Photos of a Bride Travelling Through Lisbon

What I was given was, in fact, a great gift. A bride travelling through Lisbon by metro, from Chelas to Cais do Sodré, to meet the groom and the rest of the family and wedding guests, and then set off again, by boat, to the other side of the river. By ferry to Cacilhas, and in Cacilhas gathering everyone for a walk flanked by warehouses and the river — the Tagus we love — which now and then throws at us those heavy drops like affectionate hands wanting to touch us, maybe thinking we’re lacking affection, something that is not the case on a wedding day, and no one needs extra water falling on top.
And always the rain falling, even if not soaking too much, until we arrived at Ponto Final, the wedding ceremony venue that the rain, jealous of the Tagus, didn’t allow to happen as planned — on the pontoon over the river, like a ship ready to set sail on a grand and happy voyage.
Grateful Wedding Photographer

At the end of the day, still with enough light to see, and under that same rain that never stopped, we returned by boat to Alcântara. I went too because it was my duty to record the entire day until the end, even if boats, rivers, waves, and unrelenting rain are not exactly where I feel most at ease, even when chasing my beloved photographs.
Because of Helena, who came from Germany where this type of rain that slowly wets you means nothing, and João, the journeys they took, the rain that never stopped, the boat riding the waves in the middle of the river like a fiery steed, and all those people who, undisturbed by it — the rain — fulfilled what one must on a wedding day, I, as the wedding photographer who was there, thank you all for what you gave me.
Unusual Preparations and a Journey Through the City

The day began with persistent rain, the kind that doesn’t soak you right away but seeps into your bones with time. For a wedding photographer used to Portugal’s mild weather, this could have been a challenge. However, excitement was in the air, as what was planned promised to be unique: the bride and groom getting ready in the same location, and the bride taking the metro to Cais do Sodré.
João, the groom, after getting ready, took the photographer to where Helena, the bride, was having her hair and makeup done. Then they returned home together to finalise preparations. The rain, although constant, provided soft, diffused light — ideal for capturing intimate and emotional moments.
Helena, from Germany, where this kind of light rain is unremarkable, was undeterred. With determination, she travelled across Lisbon by metro, from Chelas to Cais do Sodré, to meet her groom and their wedding guests. The crossing of the Tagus was done by ferry to Cacilhas, followed by a walk along the riverfront between warehouses and the Tagus to the Ponto Final restaurant.
- Preparations of the groom and bride in the same location, creating moments of intimacy and connection
- Bride’s journey by metro, offering an urban and authentic wedding narrative
- Crossing the Tagus by ferry, adding a traditional and picturesque element to the wedding day
Ceremony and Celebration at Restaurante Ponto Final

Restaurante Ponto Final located in Cacilhas, Almada, is known for its privileged setting by the Tagus River, offering stunning views over Lisbon. With a terrace almost over the water, it’s an iconic venue for special celebrations.
The wedding ceremony was originally planned to take place on the pontoon, with the river as a backdrop. However, persistent rain forced a change of plans, and it was held inside the warm, welcoming restaurant. Despite the adversity, the atmosphere remained romantic and intimate, with the wedding guests witnessing Helena and João’s union in a unique setting.
The wedding party also took place at the same location, where guests enjoyed traditional Portuguese dishes such as grilled fresh fish, seafood rice, and octopus lagareiro-style. The combination of typical gastronomy and panoramic views over Lisbon made for an unforgettable experience for all present.
- Ceremony adapted to weather conditions, showing flexibility and resilience
- Restaurante Ponto Final is a unique setting combining tradition and modernity
- Authentic Portuguese cuisine provides a rich sensory experience
Wedding Photography with the Rain as an Ally

Far from being an obstacle, the rain became an ally in capturing unique moments. The diffused light and reflections on the wet streets gave the wedding photographs a cinematic and poetic atmosphere. The wedding photographer, inspired by the determination and joy of the couple and guests, managed to capture images that reflect the authenticity and emotion of the day.
After the celebration, as night fell and the rain continued, the group returned to Lisbon by boat to Alcântara. Despite the challenging conditions, the celebratory spirit remained high, with everyone sharing joyful and meaningful moments.
- Creative use of weather conditions to capture unique images
- Wedding photographs that reflect the authenticity and emotion of the day
- Return to Lisbon by boat, ending the day on a note of adventure and romance
